We used Printify to build our Etsy store from scratch over 30 days. Six sales, 30 listings, and a handful of customer service interactions later, here's the honest review. This isn't a sponsored post β we have an affiliate relationship with Printify, which means we'll link to them if we recommend them, but we'll tell you the real picture including the downsides.

What Is Printify?
Printify is a print-on-demand platform that connects you to a network of print providers globally. When a customer orders your product, Printify sends the order to the print provider of your choice, who produces and ships the item directly to your customer. You never touch the product.
Printify is not a printer itself β it's a marketplace of print providers (over 90 print partners). This is both its strength (choice, competition between providers, global coverage) and its weakness (inconsistent quality across providers).
Setting Up: How Long Does It Take?
Honest answer: 30-45 minutes to go from zero to your first published Etsy listing.
- Create a Printify account (free, 2 minutes)
- Connect your Etsy store via the integration (5 minutes, requires granting permissions)
- Browse the product catalogue and choose your first product
- Upload your design and position it using the design editor
- Select your print provider and pricing
- Publish directly to Etsy
The design editor is intuitive. Not Canva-level polish, but functional. You can upload PNG files, position them, preview how they'll look on the product, and see the base cost update in real time as you change providers. The Etsy publish flow is seamless β it creates the listing draft in Etsy, which you then edit and publish from Etsy's side.
Product Range and Quality
Printify's catalogue has over 900 products: apparel, mugs, phone cases, wall art, tote bags, stickers, pet products, home dΓ©cor, jewellery, accessories. For most POD sellers, the core products you'll focus on are: t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, canvas prints, and tote bags.
Print quality varies significantly by provider. This is the most important thing to understand about Printify. The same t-shirt design uploaded with "Monster Digital" as provider versus "Printify Express" will produce noticeably different results in terms of colour accuracy and hand feel. You need to order samples.
We ordered samples from three providers for our core products:
- Mugs (MWW On Demand): Print quality was sharp, colours accurate, ceramic quality solid. Arrived in 5 days from the US to Sydney. β
- T-shirts (Monster Digital): Good for all-over-print designs. DTG quality was excellent on light colours, slightly washed-out on dark navy. Standard for the industry. β
- Canvas prints (Printify Express): Colours slightly oversaturated compared to our design file. Would need to adjust design files to compensate. β οΈ
The takeaway: always order samples before you start selling. Build the sample cost into your R&D budget. Each sample run costs $20-60 depending on the product. Worth it to catch quality issues before customers do.
Pricing and Margins
Let's talk real numbers. We'll use a standard 11oz white mug as the example:
- Printify Free plan base cost: $5.68 per mug
- Printify Premium plan base cost: $4.55 per mug (20% discount)
- Shipping to USA: ~$4.30 for first item
- Selling price on Etsy: $18.99
- Gross profit (Free plan): $18.99 - $5.68 - $4.30 - $1.24 (Etsy 6.5%) - $0.20 (listing) = ~$7.57
- Gross profit (Premium plan): $18.99 - $4.55 - $4.30 - $1.24 - $0.20 = ~$8.70
Premium pays for itself ($29/month) at approximately 26+ mug sales per month at this price point. Below that volume, stick with the free plan.
Customer Service: The Good and Bad
We had one reprint situation in our 30 days β a mug arrived at a customer with a small print defect on the handle area. We submitted a support ticket to Printify with the order details and a photo from the customer.
Resolution time: 48 hours. Outcome: automatic reprint sent at no cost, no interrogation required. This matched the experience most POD sellers report β Printify's reprint policy for defective items is solid and they don't make you fight for it.
General support: live chat available but wait times can be 15-30 minutes during peak hours. Email support is reliable but slower. The knowledge base is comprehensive β most questions are answered there before you need to contact support.
Printify vs Printful: The Real Comparison
The comparison everyone asks about. Our honest take:
- Printful has better average quality control because it manages its own print facilities. Less variance between orders.
- Printify has lower prices due to the competitive provider marketplace. For the same product, Printify is typically 20-40% cheaper than Printful.
- Printify has more product variety across its provider network.
- Printful has better branding options β custom labels, packing slips, pack-ins. Printify's branding options are improving but still behind.
Conclusion: For beginners focused on margins, use Printify. For sellers who have found their winning products and want premium quality and brand experience, consider Printful for those specific products.
Final Verdict
Printify is the right starting platform for most Etsy POD sellers. The free plan removes the financial barrier to entry completely, the Etsy integration is genuinely seamless, and the product range is more than sufficient to build a niche store.
The provider quality variance is the main limitation β you need to test before you sell. Once you've found good providers for your core products, the platform performs reliably. Our 30-day experience was positive overall, and we're continuing to use it as our primary POD supplier.
Rating: 4/5 β Excellent for beginners, solid for intermediate sellers. Would benefit from better quality consistency and improved branding features.
